A Poem to Kahlan
Apr
In the days following my cancer diagnoses I became a bit depressed, morbid even, at the thought of not living to see Kahlan grow into the amazing woman I know she will be. I started writing. Now that my prognosis is more positive and my post-treatment health is getting back on track I’d like to share this poem. I wrote a goodbye letter for my baby girl and closed it with this:
If you can’t recall my sparkling eyes
or shining smile one day
you have but to seek a mirror love
for in you I’ll always stay.
Warm and safe within your heart
my memory will reside
for though we may now be apart
My love stays by your side
Approaching ONE
Sep
Approaching the one year mark is a bittersweet event. In just a few weeks little Kahlan will be diving face first into her very own birthday cake and I imagine I’ll be busting out the tissues. It’s strange to always feel torn being a mother. I’m all at once thrilled, excited, remorseful and scared shitless. Yay she’s growing up, learning like crazy, and blossoming before my eyes into an amazing little lady! Wholly crap she’s growing up, I’m losing my little peanut, and dear gods she’s gonna be a teenager one day…..
Knowing these innocent days of boundless joy and unhesitating snuggles are finite is sad yet beautiful. I’ve learned to bask in each hug like it’s the last and found time to stop for one more round of silly songs. I know the day will come when hugs are too embarrassing and mommy’s off tune singing is something to fear. So for now I memorize each embrace and sing ridiculous tunes until my throat is hoarse, and hope time will slow down just a little so my baby girl can stay my baby for just a few moments more.
She may not remember these first few years, but I will never forget them.
Newport & Oregon Coast Aquarium
Aug
In need of a celebratory getaway we headed to the coast and took 10 month old Kahlan to the Newport Aquarium. Needless to say, she had a blast, and is still signing “fish” like a kid hooked on ocean life. Future marine biologist? Hmmmm…..
Nine Months In / Nine Months Out
Jun
I realize this blog is getting updated less and less. The most amazing thing about babies? They just grow faster and faster. Kahlan grew in my belly for a good nine plus months, from peanut to baby… Now? At nine months old Kahlan is a whirlwind of activity.
Having mastered the crawl around six months, we are seemingly days from her first steps. She is cruising with regularity and standing on her own holding a toy in each hand. In fact a few days ago I caught her with Daddy’s iPhone, free standing and holding it in one hand while madly working the touchscreen with the other pointer finger.
Our days are spent exploring her world, visiting the library twice a week, daily reading sessions and a myriad of enriching activities while still managing to squeeze in time to do dishes (most days). I am regulated to hobbies I can do while she naps in my arms since it’s the only time she slows down. Hence, I’ve been reading more and am working on a side project that has left less blog time lately.
Here are a few newer pictures of Kahlan for those who have been asking:

4 Month Kahlan Update
Feb
We’ve hit the four month mark and have a beautifull and engaging baby girl to show for it. Kahlan is a wonder to behold. Full of smiles and good natured to the core, her days are now full of mommy time and endless adventure. She has discovered her toes (and how to gnaw on them), broke through her volume control and burst forth with joyous screeching giggles.
Still at the top of her charts, her new stats are as follows:
15 lbs 11oz
25″ tall
16.5″ head
That explains my huge biscept!
Teething is ramping up. The drool flows in gushes and everything in reach is a chew toy (including Mommy & Daddy). With the doctors ok we have begun letting her taste some fruits, no solid offerings just licks of juice, and she’s loving it. Watching her eager little open burst mouth when we pour ourselves orange juice is a crack up. She about took off Daddys finger when he offered her a taste!
