Birth of a Glass Studio: Pt. II — SPACE the first frontier…

July 1st, 2008 by Kirstan

As a designer I know all the “rules” about a good working space for color conscious art people, and I would assume working in glass is no different than working in other mediums in respect to the environment effecting how color is viewed. Mayhap it’s even more critical since glass is viewed not just reflectively but also transfuses light.

I DON’T CARE

I want a space that feels good, both creatively and physically comfy. I don’t feel inspired in a neutral non-color influencing room, generally white with great full spectrum 5000 Kelvin lighting… BORING

In planning our studio we opted to embrace a moodier, thoughtful motif. I like to feel introspective when I work creatively. Choosing dark paint colors, charcoal and deep spruce, seems totally backwards to traditional theories on art studio space, but it FEELS nice… like my own little Fortress of Solitude.

Yeah… I know, this looks like more of a Fortress of JUNK right now, but hey it is a garage and in a month or so it will be a whole new space.

We started with some basic de-cluttering and then moved to demolition.

Here we are halfway through ripping out a nasty old built in counter that was right where we needed to put the kiln. With the space cleared we were all set to have the wonderful guys at Portland Electric Company come in and fix us up with a 240v outlet for the kiln. Thanks Nic, you ROCK and if anyone out there needs a great electrician look these guys up!

Ok, so far we have a plan, our space, our outlet, started cleaning it out and have the first coat of paint on. Next installment I’ll go into our adventures with corrugated sheet metal…
